Step #4 Improvement Opportunities

Opportunities for improvement are identified and presented to both administration and program leadership for discussion and evaluation

In order to initiate any real change, administration and program leadership must be kept involved and informed. For administration, the results are a way to view the daily operation of a GME program and gain insight into the patient care and educational experiences of the residents as well as identify key revenue and cost variables that dictate the overall economic impact of the program. For program leadership, it is a chance to identify, plan and implement improvements in the program which often can translate into better financial rewards for the faculty who operate the residency program or at least improve the training experiences of the residents in order to better prepare them to be effective physicians after program completion. At a minimum, it will help protect the program from arbitrary cost reductions or decisions to close the program because the economics are not sustainable.
