Step #2 Identify Anomalies
Anomalies are identified, reasons and rationales for differences are investigated
This "hands-on" portion of Operational Benchmarking of GME identifies where significant differences exist relative to expected values for operating/educational characteristics of a residency program and understanding the reasons for the difference. For a typical teaching coverage team, this means identifying differentiating factors such as unique scheduling practices, loading schedule for allocating new patients between coverage teams, on-call rules and abnormalities in patient volume caused by transfers, ED volumes, etc. By uncovering these anomalies, a better understanding of the faculty/resident interactions on both operational and educational levels can be developed.
